I distinctly remember owning the english dub on tape. (Along with some of the poorly translated movies. >.>) In this, I spot several potential metaphors about the weight loss industry, modern standards of beauty, and perhaps eating disorders. In short, what women put themselves through. While some parts of thie episode are poigniant, others are admittedly- pretty screwed up. I found there to be virtually no moral. You be the judge.
And here be the English dub from my childhood. With more of an American spin. ("Just half a pound? That's the big crisis!") An alternate ending (brother plays a pratical joke, as opposed to Sarena/Usagi gaining the weight). And an educational 'Sailor Moon Says' at the end. Much of the original dilagoue is altered. A scene were Serena/Usagi skips lunch is cut.
Otep Shamaya is vegetarian and openly lesbian. She is one of the few big named, female musicians that has mastered guttural growls. Little else is know about her.
Whether this song is a personal testament or purely creative license is unknown to me. Reference to "blades" and "injections" may be metaphorical. It is unclear if the person portrayed ever acted on these urges.
The ever present theme of the lyrics is “perfection.” Nearly two summers ago, my best friend battled borderline anorexia. The song was when she held dear and likely identified with. Months later after the ordeal had ended; she related the song to me.
